Training Program

By: Scott M. Saboy

Baguio City, Philippines -- Ten trainees, three ladies and seven men, have signed up for the 2nd Batch of the Central Baguio Church of Christ's Missionary Training Program (CMTP-2). They are Evalyn Azurin (Narciso, Zambales), Robin Baquiran (Baguio City), Paul Catao-an (Kayapa, Nueva Vizcaya), Ricardo Estrada (Malita, Davao del Sur), Oscar Manangan (Pres. Quirino, Sultan Kudarat), Fely Lozano (Baguio City), Daniel Nachuman (Aguinaldo, Ifugao), Michael Perrera (Calasiao, Pangasinan), Sandra Pigganto (Tinoc, Ifugao), and Willy Quinsay (Binalonan, Pangasinan).

Officially called "Missionary Training Partners" (MTPs), the trainees are a mix of single and married folks, 21 to 59 years old, and high school graduates to degree holders.

The MTPs underwent a diagnostic test on 29 January 2005 covering profiency in English Grammar and Vocabulary (Speed Test), Bible, Mathematics, and Abstract Reasoning. They also had team-building activities on 06 February 2005 which included lecturettes on Personal Mastery, Servant Leadership, and Teamwork as well as Structured Learning Exercises (SLEs) like Tower Building, Behavioral Patterns Inventory, Goals for Personal Development Inventory, Visiograph, among others.

MTP-2 follows the progression scheme of the MTP-1 with a six-month General Orientation Course (GOC, six-month Supervised Field Practice (SFP), and two-day Revalida (Culminating/Final Assessment Program).

Besides the original seven subjects (i.e. Christian Leadership, Christian Missions, Church Music, Basic Communication 1 - English Grammar and Composition, Hermeneutics, Homiletics, Personality Development, and Personal Evangelism), Basic Communication 2 - Media and Missions was recently added.

Alex Coloma, Erwin Panday, Scott Saboy, and Sammy Seridio of the Baguio Mission Team (BMT) serve as full-time instructors. Alvin Tanicala, a locally known mediaman working as public relations officer to the Department of Social Welfare and Development-Cordillera Administrative Region (DSWD-CAR), has recently joined the teaching pool and is handling Basic Com2 2.

Classes are temporarily being held at the WBS office at the Baguio Church of Christ along Rimando Road, Baguio every morning from Tuesday to Saturday. Plans are underway for the transfer of the MTPs' classroom and lodging to another facility two kilometers from the city's central business district.

The trainees' activities also include house-to-house campaigns, tracts distribution, community work, and worship serving.

For the SFP, the MTPs are expected to be sent in two separate groups to new church planting missions in Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila and San Carlos City, Pangasinan.

The six MTPs of Batch 1 are now in Tagaytay City for a church planting work under the leadership of Emmanuel Layco, an original member of the BMT.
